Frequently Asked Questions

How does Cetasol count vessels for billing purposes?

A vessel is counted if it has been actively tracked on the Cetasol platform at any point during the billing month. Vessels that are decommissioned, sold, or temporarily removed from your fleet roster mid-month are prorated. AIS vessels you monitor for situational awareness (not in your owned fleet) are tracked separately under our watch-list feature and do not count against your vessel quota.

What AIS data sources does Cetasol use?

Cetasol aggregates from multiple commercial AIS networks covering terrestrial receivers in over 180 countries as well as three satellite AIS providers for open-ocean coverage. Our fusion engine deduplicates and cross-validates position reports to provide the highest possible data quality. For vessels in your fleet, you can also deploy our onboard sensor SDK to supplement AIS with direct vessel telemetry, which reduces latency and adds data types AIS doesn't carry (engine state, fuel consumption, cargo status).

Can we run Cetasol in our own cloud environment or on-premises?

Yes. Enterprise plan customers can deploy the Cetasol platform in their own AWS, Azure, or GCP environment using our containerized deployment package. On-premises deployment is also available for operators with air-gapped network requirements, such as defense-adjacent offshore operations. Both options include the same platform capabilities as the managed cloud version. Deployment support and architecture review are included in the Enterprise onboarding package.

What is your data retention and GDPR compliance posture?

Cetasol is GDPR compliant and processes all EU customer data within EU-based AWS regions (eu-west-1, eu-central-1). We hold a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) with all customers processing personal data. Vessel position data from AIS is treated as public maritime safety data under IMO regulations; crew and personal data submitted by customers is handled under standard data controller / data processor terms. Our full data retention schedule and deletion request procedures are detailed in our Privacy Policy.

Is there a free trial or pilot period available?

We offer a 30-day pilot for qualified operators. During the pilot, you get access to all Professional plan features for up to 20 vessels at no cost. We don't require a credit card upfront. Pilots are set up with your actual vessel MMSI numbers and real AIS data so you can evaluate Cetasol against your live operations rather than against synthetic demos. To request a pilot, fill out the contact form and mention your fleet size and primary use case.

How long does integration and onboarding typically take?

Most customers are fully operational within 5 business days. Day 1-2 covers account setup, vessel roster import, and AIS data validation. Day 3-4 covers API integration with your existing systems (VMS, ERP, or fleet management software) if needed. Day 5 is a training session with your operations team. Enterprise deployments with on-premises components or large sensor SDK rollouts typically take 3-6 weeks and include a dedicated implementation engineer.
